Largest World War II bomb has been found in East London 2012 Olympics site. A British Army bomb disposal team is working carefully to dismantle large unexploded World War II bomb unearthed this week near the future Olympic Park in London. Royal Engineers will cut through the metal casing of the 60-year old bomb within the next 24 hours. The device, which measures 5ft by 3ft, will then be “steamed” so the explosive becomes a safe liquid. The 2,000lb bomb, believed to contain 1,000lb of high explosives, has been encased in a sand & wood “igloo” to absorb any blast if it goes off.

The World War II bomb was found from the banks of the Lea near Three Mills Island in Bromley-by-Bow by the 2012 Olympics site on Monday afternoon. Disposal experts have already disabled its fuse after it began to tick. A bomb disposal officer, Captain Si Oates, poured a salt solution to “freeze it” & then deployed a powerful magnet in case the timer had also been set off. An official said, “This is the largest World War II bomb to be discovered in the past three decades”.
