Bomb blast in Sri Lanka killed 11 including a senior Lankan government minister & injured 50 on Sunday.
Jeyaraj Fernandopulle 55 years old Sri Lanka’s Highways Minister was presiding over a flag-raising ceremony in the town of Weliveriya outside of the capital Colombo when the blast occurred.
Police said they suspected a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber detonated explosives at the ceremony where locals had gathered to mark traditional New Year’s celebrations.
A senior official of Police said, “The minister was raising the national flag to kick off the New Year celebrations when the blast occurred”.
Fernandopulle had been a vocal critic of the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels & was a member of Sri Lanka’s failed peace talks with the guerrillas.
