Airport employees stop strike
Mar 13th, 2008 | Category:Breaking News, World NewsThe employee Union of airport Authority of India has calls off its nationwide strike on Thursday. Decision to call-off the strike came after assurance from the Aviation Ministry to check viability of old airport at Hyderabad. The employees of the Airport Authority of India went on an indefinite “non-cooperation” strike from March 12 midnight, against the government’s move to close down old airports at Bangalore & Hyderabad.
All the national & international airports around the India had joined the strike. The striking workers mostly belonged to the ground staff & house keeping departments. The agitation began after one round of talks between the employees & the Civil Aviation Ministry failed to end the deadlock over the demands of the employees. The demands were for withdrawal of the government’s decision to close existing airports at Bangalore & Hyderabad, after new airports there become operational.
The airport ground authorities said that they were earlier informed about the new airports with the clause that the old ones will still function. However, this clause was subsequently modified without their knowledge for which they have gone on a non-cooperation movement. They also said that this agitation will continue till their demands are not met.
